Volunteer Work Congo Brazzaville

Volunteer Congo

Not to be confused with its much larger neighbour, the Republic of Congo ~ and often referred to as Congo Brazzaville after its capital city ~ is home to some 5.381 million people and was ruled as a Marxist state after independence until its economy collapsed along with its infrastructure. Abandoned by the then collapsing USSR, Congo Brazzaville has never enjoyed much stability nor peace. The Republic of Congo today is ranked in 149th place in 2019 out of 189 countries and territories in terms of life expectancy, literacy, access to knowledge and the living standards of a country. Life expectancy in the Congo is 64.57 years (2019) with unemployment at over 50% and most live on under 60p a day.

Suspicion of outside interference means that the volunteer sector isn't well developed in the Congo even though it faces many challenges as a country not least addressing the needs of the thousands of orphaned or abandoned children who flock to the capital to exist on the streets where they live side by side with others who have made their way across the Congo River from neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo to escape the ongoing instability there. Anyone looking to volunteer in the Congo will need to speak French and that is very much a prerequisite as it's the national language and if you don't speak it, you can't communicate! Volunteer work in the Congo mainly focuses on delivery of health care, rolling put HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention programs as well as looking after lost, orphaned or abandoned children.

Please note that the few volunteer opportunities in the Republic of Congo have been put on hold because of travel restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Hopefully they will be back up and running soon. In the meantime, if you run or know of a volunteer work project in the Republic of Congo, please let us know by contacting here. We look forward to hearing from you!

In a shameless bit of self-promotion, read this novel by the African Volunteer Network team about volunteering in Uganda. "Well worth the read especially for those working with non-profits abroad. In fact, it should be required reading."
